About Our School:

The study of martial arts is not just about punching, kicking, and fighting. Actually it is about living. Through the physical aspects of the martial arts we learn teamwork, goal setting, and work ethics. We learn to set a goal and then what it takes to follow through and achieve that goal. Here at the PUMA Karate - Yamabiko Dojo, not only will you learn practical self-defense skills but, with consistent practice, you will uncover the deeper meanings that comprise the essential quality of this traditional art which, in turn, will help you to replace the unwanted pressures and stress of everyday life with internal peace, harmony, and balance.
With Master Abraham's background as a Master Practitioner in Neuro-Linguistic Strategies, we have a unique teaching style, structure and expertise that integrate advanced and accelerated learning strategies with the martial arts. This results in a uniquely focused yet subtle learning process specific to each student based on their strengths, challenges and aptitudes. The focus is to provide a pathway for development and tools to enrich your or your child's life. You will learn numerous life skills while developing focus, determination, esteem, ambition and belief to be the best you can be. Our focus is not to develop martial artists but to develop people that have an impact in their lives and the lives of those they come in contact with.
Japanese Karate, Ninpo Taijutsu, Jujutsu and Pressure Points are the essence of the PUMA Karate - Yamabiko Dojo curriculum and are taught as a traditional Japanese Martial Art. While some might argue that the martial arts is a modern recreation, those who have spent any time studying this Art come to realize that it is a unique entity with characteristics not seen in other martial arts.

Physical training at the PUMA Karate - Yamabiko Dojo is focused on Tai Sabaki, the refined use of body movements, to provide a catalyst behind the defensive action. It does not rely solely on muscular strength and speed, which decline with age.

Portions of our training are done with students working with partners so that they can develop correct timing, distancing, and body mechanics. Since the training is skill oriented and not strength oriented it provides a smaller person with an effective means of handling confrontations with larger, stronger opponents. Throughout all levels of training numerous exercises are employed which require the students to develop both spontaneity in their abilities and a strong spirit. A student should not be content to mechanically repeat the classic patterns (kata) in a textbook situation without a much deeper understanding of what is within the movements. The art must be living, flowing, natural, and ever-evolving to be effective.
The initials of the Pacific Unified Martial Arts also represent a Native American fighting animal, the PUMA, which has come to be the emblem of the system. The Yin and Yang in the background of this emblem signify the system's Asian roots. The outer circle of the emblem is made up of two semi circles in the shape of arrows representing the constant blending of hard and soft and balance of power. It also represents the “two-way” action that is the basis of “Small Circle Jujitsu™”. Additionally, within the circle are the Japanese kanji that represent Yin and Yang (another symbol of the balance of hard and soft, hot and cold, light and dark). Lastly, the colors of the emblem represent the five elements of existence (cycle of creation and cycle of destruction) in the oriental philosophy. These are Fire (red), Water (blue), Earth (green), Wood (brown) and Metal (yellow) . These elements as well as the concepts of Yin and Yang are the underpinnings of the Tuite and Kyusho pressure point defense taught at the school.
It is our belief that a fighter is truly an artist in the sense that once having mastered the basics of the art, he must then peel away the old layers and at the same time seek new ideas to develop a style that is individually right for him or her. We do not seek to stamp repetitive copies from some archaic mold, but rather to encourage individual development of personal style.
The fighting arts are completely subjective and the individuals development must, by necessity, be the result of mastering the basics that lead to the attainment of the first degree Black Belt.
It is only at this time that one begins to travel the lonely road of personal challenge toward the always illusive goal of perfection.
